Sookmyung Receives Education Management Award and Ministerial Award for Gender Equality and Family
Sookmyung Women's University received the Education Management Award as well as the Ministerial Award from the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family at the “Korea Creative Management 2026” ceremony held on Thursday, April 23, at The Plaza Seoul. At this year’s awards, Sookmyung Women’s University was recognized in the field of education management for its achievements in carrying out social responsibility through educational innovation aimed at fostering practice-oriented talent and advancing youth employment support systems. In addition, the university was highly praised for its contributions to nurturing female talent and promoting the values of gender equality, earning the Ministerial Award from the Ministry of Gender Equality and Family. Founded in 1906 by the imperial family of the Korean Empire, Sookmyung Women’s University has served as a cradle of women’s education in Korea and has led efforts to elevate the social status of women in step with changing times over the past 120 years. Celebrating its 120th anniversary this year, the university is focusing on cultivating individuals who open new paths beyond conventional boundaries under its vision, “Outthinkers Sookmyung.” At a time when expanding women’s social participation and leadership remains an important challenge, Sookmyung Women’s University has been recognized for creating an environment in which female students can actively thrive across various fields while promoting the values of gender equality. Centered around the University Job Plus Center, a project supported by the Ministry of Employment and Labor, Sookmyung Women’s University has established a comprehensive career and employment support system while operating programs tailored to each student’s major and aptitude. The university provides an integrated framework that connects career planning for underclassmen with job preparation for upperclassmen, enabling students to take the lead in shaping their own futures. In particular, the university demonstrated its exceptional educational capabilities by earning the highest “Excellent” rating for ten consecutive years in the Ministry of Employment and Labor’s performance evaluations, becoming the only university in the Seoul metropolitan area to achieve this distinction. In addition, since establishing its College of Engineering in 2016, Sookmyung Women’s University has spent the past decade expanding its educational and research infrastructure in order to lower barriers for women entering science and engineering fields. Beginning in 2023, the university further strengthened its foundation for cultivating expertise in key fields including artificial intelligence by launching five advanced academic programs, such as the Division of Artificial Intelligence Engineering, the Computer Science major, and the Data Science major. This achievement is particularly noteworthy given the continued underrepresentation of women in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) fields in Korean society. According to 2023 statistics, women accounted for only 27.6% of STEM graduates in Korea, lower than the OECD average of 33.5%. Furthermore, Sookmyung Women’s University has strengthened its global network by launching the “Silicon Valley Sookmyung Young Leaders Club” last year, which includes more than 50 alumni currently working in Silicon Valley. Through this initiative, the university is expanding career exploration and mentoring opportunities for science and engineering students aspiring to advance overseas. President Moon Si-yeun stated, “Building on 120 years of tradition in women’s education, Sookmyung Women’s University has pioneered innovative education so that students can realize their potential on broader stages.” She added, “We will continue to strongly support the bold challenges and growth of outstanding women leaders in the future.”
