A research team led by Professors Jonghoon Park, Kyunghyun Yoo, and JeongboL Lee of the Division of Biological Sciences has been selected for a newly funded project under the Ministry of Science and ICT’s 2026 Bio and Medical Technology Development Program.
The team was selected for the project, Discovery of Antifibrotic Therapeutic Targets and Candidate Compounds Through Recognition and Control of the Mechanical Microenvironment, under the Future Medical Innovation Response Technology Development initiative. Of the total KRW 9.5 billion project budget, the university’s research team will receive KRW 2.255 billion to carry out the study.
The research focuses on changes in the mechanical microenvironment, a key factor underlying fibrotic diseases that commonly occur across multiple organs, including the kidney and liver.
The researchers plan to investigate how changes in tissue stiffness influence cellular signaling and disease progression and to use these findings to identify novel antifibrotic therapeutic targets and candidate compounds. The team will also establish an integrated platform capable of closely replicating disease conditions to quantify the physical characteristics of fibrotic microenvironments and compare organ-specific responses.
The research team stated, “This project will enable a more precise understanding of the pathological mechanisms underlying fibrosis and establish a foundation for expanding future research into preclinical evaluation and therapeutic development for a range of fibrotic diseases, including those affecting the kidney and liver.”
